What is human trafficking?

INTRODUCTION

The increase of social injustice, evil being done to people, and media attention focused upon sexual abuse over recent years has opened the door of my heart to write this paper. Sexual abuse and rape crosses all boundaries whether racial, ethnic, economic, educational, or spiritual. Unlike other forms of abuse, the physical, emotional, and spiritual effects of sexual abuse often are not immediately evident and, therefore, may be downplayed or overlooked.

Hope For victims of Sexual Abuse, written by Harry Schaumburg and Robert McGee, defines sexual abuse as any sexual activity, either verbal or physical, engaged in without consent, which may be emotionally or physically harmful and which exploits a person in order to meet another person’s sexual or emotional needs. The person does not consent if he or she cannot reasonably choose to consent or refuse because of age, circumstances, level of understanding and dependency, or relationship to the offender.

Sexual abuse is a very sensitive and emotionally charged topic. Sexual abuse is a devastating violation of the victim’s body integrity. Facing the reality and details of abuse can be both shocking and devastating. Yet, avoiding the issue risks further injury from the devastating aftereffects of abuse. Sexual abuse can affect both children and adults. It encompasses a wide range of behavior, from fondling and exhibitionism to forcible rape and commercial exploitation through prostitution or pornography. Sexual abuse takes many forms and involves varying degrees of violence and emotional trauma.

Organizations, such as International Justice Mission, provide overwhelming stories of Nepalese innocent children who are trafficked to India and are sold as sex slaves and traded in major cities as well as gulf countries.

I know organizations in Kathmandu, Nepal, which are working actively to abolish this human sex slavery system. In fact, we also have women that were freed in our church back home in Nepal. I was overwhelmed hearing their stories and having the panic they felt described to me. My eyes filled with tears and I became agitated and felt towards the people who abused them. I found myself getting very angry seeing Indians and started to dislike Indians. But, I knew I needed to work to get justice for these women and not just sit by thinking about what had happened to them. I heard story after story about all these dear children—of how they were lured, fooled, and sold. Most of them were around the age of 10-16 years while they were trafficked. This is a long, yet a meaningful and emotional introduction that sets up the background for this graphic story in its tales of horror.

Human Trafficking – Nepal’s Great Big Problem!

Image by Aamir Mohd Khan from Pixabay

There are 3 kinds of trafficking:

1st – Sold: Trafficking of young girls (as young as 8 years old) are sold to India for the purpose of prostitution is probably the busiest ‘slave trade’ of its kind anywhere in the world.

2nd – Slave: Domestic slave still exist in Nepal as the girls are sold as a slave to work at someone’s home where the children will be mistreated and abused. Often times children would work as slaves to pay off their parents’ debt to the owner/landlord.

3rd – Labor: Boys are sold into bond slave labor to mining companies in India where they end up getting hurt, sick, and many die or simply live by begging in the streets.

Poverty is rampant and a driving force with human trafficking as 80% of the population lives on less than $1 a day.

Sadly, each year 10,000 to 20,000 children are sold into prostitution or sold into bond slave labor.

In summary, illiterate, uneducated, and financially destitute parents are conned into selling their own children unknowingly!

The modern day slave trade is a nightmare.
By interrupting Human Trafficking, we are bringing a message of hope to Nepal’s poor.

We are educating those illiterate and uneducated moms and dads.
We are bringing a strong message through our leaflet and mobile video presentation about the horror of human trafficking and hope in Jesus Christ in the mountain villages.

Children Rescue Mission finds safe homes for orphaned, destitute, low caste children. We provide basic means to support the children so they will attend school and remain at home. Our vision is that every poor child in Nepal would have the opportunity to have their basic needs met as they meet Christ.

Children Rescue Mission is rebuilding the lives of Nepal’s poor. You can help these vulnerable families and children by making a donation of any amount and by sharing our link with your own network of friends and families.

Story of Survivors

Image by Eduardo Davad from Pixabay

The following are stories of innocent Nepalese children and women who were sold to India as Sex slaves and what they went through.  The background and social environment of all these children and women are similar; extreme poverty and what we describe as “GOLD”, (Girl Orphaned Low Caste Destitute).

A child named Patti was sold at the age of 10.  She shares how a man told her, “Come. We will go see a movie”.  She was a child and would like to see a movie, but instead, he took her to the capital city of Kathmandu, Nepal to be used over and over again.  “After that I never went back home,” said Patti.

Another woman had a little baby girl of 2 years old who was suffering from pneumonia She was in need of medicine for her child.  She couldn’t find medicine in Nepal and wanted to go to India.  A man from her own neighborhood, whom she had known for 10 years, lied to her saying, “I will take you to India, where my uncle has a cure.”  Delighted and relieved she travelled with him on the train to India. Along the way he gave her a Pepsi to drink.  It was drugged and the next thing she knew she awoke imprisoned in a Bombay Brothel.  She never saw her child again.

Background and Social Environment

Most Survivors are from the remote villages of Nepal. Although mountain village life can be fascinating, it is difficult.  The children are happy but also naĂŻve and have never been exposed to city life. They are innocent and easily misled.  They are therefore, vulnerable to being trafficked because they are attracted by any good-looking, prosperous-seeming person who is dressed well and might represent a hope for a better future.

Consider Anna’s case, her father infected her mother with AIDs and then left his family to go to the gulf country to look for work. Instead of sending money home, he re-married and never returned leaving Anna and her seven siblings and sick mother to fend for themselves.  Anna’s society is not understanding towards HIV/ AIDS patients. Her community is low caste to begin with but now, Anna and her family are considered as untouchable even by her caste. Despite the shame of AIDs and being outcasts they struggled to keep their family together and live happily.

Anna’s mother is infected with AIDs but she is a good hard-working woman who tries to support her family. Unfortunately, that is not enough. There is not enough land to cultivate to feed her children. She works long hours in the fields but the work is very hard. There is not much food. She is very weak because she is very sick.  The family helps but it is too much. Anna’s mother dies.  The grandmother must now look after these small grandchildren and survive.

Getting an education and work is an elusive dream. The more practical dream is eating a meal once or twice a day. They have nothing. Anna feels the need to support her family but financially, the community where Anna lives is impoverished. There is no help. The ‘wealthiest’ person there is still poor by any standard. Anna is 14 years old when a good-looking guy tells her that he can find her work in the city.

Anna is desperate. She believes easily.  She has no hope here and is fascinated thinking about city life and a future. She has no trafficking awareness. She trusts him but instead of being introduced into a good job, she is stolen and trafficked into a living hell. Anna’s grandmother is grief struck. Her granddaughter is lost. She still remembers her face.

In Anna’s own words she says “
a handsome guy told me and my friend Meena that he would introduce us to a good place to work in the city. He lied to us and took us to a hotel claiming his uncle’s house was full.  That night we were forcefully raped by a group of people.  We were helpless. I had a dream to earn some money and marry a good man. But now my dream of marriage has been shattered”.

Faith and spirituality issues

Today, thankfully, Anna was rescued and is at home but she continues to fight for life. The process of healing is difficult for a victim of sexual abuse. The wounds are emotional, spiritual, moral and personal. They are wounds to the soul. Anna questions why God allowed these terrible things to be in her life? She had nothing but at least she had her person, her ‘self’, yet, even that was taken.  CRM supports children like Anna. We work to give them real hope – a chance for education, the hope for real work and the hope of real salvation through Jesus Christ.

Reaching out to Street Children

When parents are working 12 to 15 hours a day, children as young as 4 or 5, are alone all day with no one looking after them. They wander around looking for food, looking for help and friends. They are street children.

Today there are approximately 5,000 street children in Kathmandu.  These children are at risk of being stolen and trafficked to India.  Children Rescue Mission provides them with a place to go and warm meals and teaches them to pray and how to stay away from the human traffickers.

Children Rescue Mission provides warm meals each Friday to endangered street children in the slum areas of Kathmandu, Nepal.  Many children and their parents eventually learn about Christ.

Stories of Horror!

“Before I quit my school, I used to study in class and do household chores and farming jobs. I had never heard about girls being trafficked to Delhi. I learned about this later. Now I know,” a trafficked girl explains.

In one situation, a neighbor in a village created a fake “marriage.” But rather than marrying the girl, the ’groom’ to be sold her to a Delhi brothel house. She asked the woman there, “Where are the people who brought me here?” The woman replied, “They left you here because they sold you to us.”

About 20 years ago a girl named Ruth was drugged and sold by traffickers to a brothel in Mumbai, India. At the time, Ruth was the mother of a one and a half year old boy. “Many friends in my village insisted that I go abroad as many other women were already there. I agreed and got a passport,” she shared. “The human trafficking broker made the visa to allow me to go any country. At 12 pm I was sent to go to work. A few men looked at me oddly. I knew they had bad intentions. I screamed and tried to run upstairs to my room but the madam hit me saying, ‘Why did you come up stairs?’ Not only me but also many other sisters also have been beaten. Their lives are miserable.”

Sarah went to Malaysia with hopes of working in a hotel or a school, but after arriving at the Malaysian airport she knew that the broker had lied to her. She was taken and forced to work as a domestic worker where she was physically and mentally abused.

Brokers are the people who sell people’s sisters, mothers, and brothers by enticing them with good jobs and money. Nowadays human trafficking has become a very critical issue. Victims of human trafficking lose their freedom, become slaves and are then exploited and often die in bondage. Why do they go? They are trying to escape gender discrimination in the workplace. They have little if any money and are socially backwards and uneducated people. They are typically victims of violence in their homes or villages. They also are generally uninformed about what could happen to them.
In most cases we find that they are sold into slavery by people they know; even family members. They trust that these people are helping them to find a better life or more comfortable life. Many Nepalese are at risk of human trafficking and are illegally being taken abroad. In Nepal, sadly, many people see human trafficking as entertainment. People are hiding the human trafficking issues. Many of these girls start their jobs in a restaurant, and later on they are forced into hard labor or forced to sell their bodies. According to Nepal’s Women Children and Social Welfare Ministry, there are more than 30,000 to 40,000 girls and women who work as prostitutes in Nepal.

Why do we care about Human Trafficking?

Human trafficking is a national tragedy for Nepal. Often parents of girls who were sold to brothels will not allow them to come home after being trafficked because of their belief in Karma. Without a home and stigmatized, many of these girls end up back in the hands of human traffickers.

What do we do and why?

We are Children Rescue Mission (CRM). Our goal is to fight human trafficking by providing basic needs and education for children so they learn to avoid trafficking and stay in their homes, all while sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ. Most of the children we support are orphans in unthinkable situations. We believe that providing for children’s needs and raising awareness about human trafficking are ways we can support these children and eventually lead them to Jesus Christ. CRM spreads awareness through documentary video presentations and spreading leaflets in the remote villages where the illiteracy rate is as high at 90%.
If the families are extremely poor, Children Rescue Mission provides tools and resources to local men and women to help find work to maintain a sustainable business and income for their families. We have launched several projects, such as distributing goats and chickens to raise and reproduce and street carts for the families to sell vegetables from.

In Nepal, women are less valuable economically than men and less likely to find work. Parents may “sell” a daughter, under the impression that the buyer – or slave trader – can help her to find work. The slavers encourage families claiming that she might be able to send money back to the family. Lack of education and unawareness is a key reason why the poor girls are sold into human trafficking.

Trafficking of Girls in Nepal!

Girl trafficking is one of the most prevalent and critical problems of Nepal. It is a major social crime in Nepal. It has spread rapidly in remote areas where people are uneducated, ignorant and poor. All we know is that girl trafficking is the Illegal act of buying, selling and exploiting girls. There are countless girls in Nepal who are facing trafficking. It is increasing day by day. They are trafficked and left at the brothel where they are compelled to act as prostitutes. Traffickers in Nepal mostly sell the girls in India.

An estimated 10,000 to 20,000 girls are sold every year through different ways in Nepal to India and other countries. From rural areas, illiterate girls, who are suffering from poverty, are brought to cities by brokers who act like they have good jobs for them. The girls who are sold in prostitution houses come back to Nepal being HIV infected. They pass on HIV to other youths in Nepal. Some girls who are victimized and infected with HIV are sent back to Nepal empty handed. They are not accepted by their family or society. They are ignored and hated.

Child labor is a crime in which children are forced to work in their very early years and perform responsibilities just like adults by taking part in the economic activities. According to the International Labor Organization (ILO), there is an age limit applied to children, that children up to age fifteen will not involve in any type of work forcefully. It causes lack of many important things in the life of a child like improper physical growth and development, inappropriate development of the mind, and it is intellectually unhealthy.

Child labor keeps a child away from all the benefits of childhood, the happiest and memorable period of life. The main causes of child labor all over the world is poverty of parents, society, a low salary, joblessness, poor living standards and understanding, social injustice, a lack of schools, backwardness and ineffective laws which are directly affecting the development of the country. Though child labor is declining at the rate of 100,000 every year, Nepal still accounts for 1.6 million children between (5-17 years) in child labor. Of these 621,000 are estimated to be engaged in hazardous work. Estimates suggest that 60 percent of children in hazardous workplace are girls ( 373,000)

Human trafficking involves recruiting and transporting people into a situation of exploitation through the use of violence, and forcing them to work against their will. In other words, trafficking is a process of enslaving people, coercing them into a situation with no way out, and exploiting them to make money. People can be trafficked for many different forms of exploitation such as forced prostitution, forced labor, forced begging, forced criminality, domestic servitude, forced marriage, and forced organ removal. Human trafficking is the third most profitable criminal activity in the world making in US dollars $10 billion every year. Victims are trafficked by the people they know and trust, including friends, neighbors, as well as by seemingly trustworthy agencies. Severe natural disasters like earthquakes and floods have left millions homeless and impoverished, leaving people desperate and thus easily exploited by human traffickers.

Human trafficking in numbers

  • 51% of identified victims of trafficking are women, 28% children and 21% men
  • 72% people exploited in the sex industry are women
  • 63% of identified traffickers were men and 37% women
  • 43% of victims are trafficked domestically within national borders

Estimated by The United Nations Office for Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the main causes of human trafficking are lack of employment opportunity, extreme greed for wealth, poor economic systems, unwholesome business gains, low self-esteem, poverty, etc.

The victims in the process of trafficking are abused and exploited in specific conditions, which may result in short-term and long-term, minor and severe, psychological and physical injuries; as well as diseases and infections, especially sexually transmitted diseases or HIV viruses. Sometimes this can go to the extreme and result in permanent disabilities and death. Symptoms like: anxiety, depression, alienation, disorientation, aggression and difficulties in concentration are direct consequences of the long-term and repeated traumatic experiences that victims suffer during the process of trafficking. Human trafficking is more than a problem of simple slavery, it is a problem of human empathy. The thirst and greed that humans experience will always outweigh the sound of their own conscience. The only way to reduce human trafficking is to raise awareness and to try to stop it wherever it comes up. This means that illegal prostitution and drug rings need to be stamped out.

Horror’s of Human Trafficking in Nepal

Human trafficking and selling of livestock has been a major issue in Nepalese society, even when we were growing up in the development of human rights. In ancient times in Nepal, crimes related to human trafficking were done by kings, so this action was not prohibited because humans were considered as a simple purchase. In the present time the influence of tradition can still be found in our society in the selling and buying people. When people are sold for prostitution or other exploitative purposes, it is known as human trafficking.

Human Trafficking, the bringing of people abroad for purchase, is morally depraved. Taking advantage of the young and vulnerable by force and abuse of power, manipulating their victims through fear, the traffickers bring their victims to distant cities or abroad and put them in unfamiliar places where they can be easily taken advantage of.

Women and children are being sold due to the lack of opportunities for adequate employment, an open border with India, poverty, lack of political instability, etc. About 2.5 million adolescents and millions of children worldwide are victims of human trafficking. Only 1 out of 100 victims involved in human trafficking are rescued. Nepal has been the source and destination for transit labor foremen, women, and children for human trafficking. Nepalese women and girls are sold in India and Arab countries east countries for sexual exploitation.

Nepalese men, women, and children are forced to work in construction, factories and mines in India, Gulf countries, and Asia. Some Nepalese women who agree to marriage with Chinese and South Korean men through Nepalese companies are victims of trafficking. Similarly, they also risk becoming domestic workers. Some people of Bangladesh and other countries have made fake jobs in the Gulf countries presenting fake Nepali documents, and target illiterate and uneducated people for human trafficking. Illegal manpower companies have adopted such measures to avoid government laws. In Nepal, there are many workers from agriculture, brick-making, and other industries suffering from trafficking. Nepali women work as domestic servants at private residences, guesthouses and restaurants at increasing rates. Many Nepalese children and women whose houses and livestock were destroyed in the 2015 earthquake, constitute the principal victims.

Traffickers are using social networks and mobile technology to tempt and even bury their victims. The primary reasons for human trafficking include the lack of education and awareness. In Nepalese society, corruption within the country and an open border constitute additional reasons. Why does a person feel encouraged to sell human beings? People sell others as slaves for money because they lack of morality. Greedy people are attracted to money and will do anything for it, causing people to be sold like animals.

First of all, the law related to human rights needs to be strictly followed. Weaknesses in the law need to be addressed. People who inform on such crimes need to be rewarded. Victims need to be given proper compensation. They should be given employment and society needs to treat them well. All educated people need to take action against this crime. Such action needs to start with us. The human trafficking network is spread not only in Nepal, but also throughout the world. The law within one country is not capable of controlling human trafficking and behavior. It has become a world-wide challenge. Many in Nepal consider victims of sex trafficking merely to have suffered a case of bad luck or karma. In Nepal, such offenses are prohibited by the state, and human trafficking is forbidden by Nepal’s law, which is considered to be written under the constitution’s authority. The abolition of slavery was announced by former Prime Minister Chandrasamsher in April 13, 1925.
